Africa’s First Bitcoin Treasury Company Launches With Bold Vision

Africa Bitcoin Corporation says BTC is more than an investment – it’s a lifeline against weak currencies and inflation
Africa has entered a new chapter in Bitcoin adoption with the launch of Africa Bitcoin Corporation (ABC), the continent’s first publicly listed Bitcoin treasury company on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
Formerly known as Altvest Capital, the company rebranded earlier this year with a plan to raise $210 million for Bitcoin purchases through preferential share offerings and structured debt notes. ABC has already secured 11 million rand ($633,000) in its first phase, aiming to reach $11 million before scaling further.
Chairman Stafford Masie and CEO Warren Wheatley said the company’s mission extends beyond capital markets. While BTC exposure will strengthen ABC’s balance sheet, the bigger goal is to provide Bitcoin-backed financial services – including credit, savings, and structured products – to help South African entrepreneurs and small businesses access funding.
Bitcoin seen as survival tool in Africa
Masie stressed that Bitcoin plays a different role in Africa than in developed economies. While investors in the US or Europe may view BTC as an alternative asset, for Africans it represents a store of value and medium of exchange in the face of currency debasement and high inflation.
“In Africa, when financial services don’t work, people die. That’s our reality,” Masie said, adding that Bitcoin offers life-saving protection where local money fails.
He argued that South Africa’s challenges – from political uncertainty to corruption – ultimately stem from monetary dysfunction. “Your groceries are not getting more expensive; the money is getting weaker,” Masie explained.
Capital markets gain Bitcoin exposure
The launch of ABC also gives African capital markets a new path to gain exposure to Bitcoin, offering opportunities for both retail and institutional investors.
“We want to serve the individual who is not a cypherpunk, all the way through to corporations and fixed income markets wanting exposure to the asset class,” Masie said.
For ABC, the Bitcoin treasury is more than a financial experiment – it’s a bid to prove that Bitcoin can solve real-world problems on the continent while bridging grassroots adoption with institutional demand.
