SpaceX makes $153M Bitcoin move after three years of silence

Transfer of 1,308 BTC coincides with rising political pressure and Pentagon’s shift toward new defense partners
SpaceX has moved 1,308 BTC worth approximately $153 million, marking its first onchain Bitcoin transaction since 2021. The transfer was identified by blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence, which tracks wallets associated with the company.
The Bitcoin was withdrawn from 16 legacy Pay-to-Public-Key-Hash (P2PKH) addresses and consolidated into a single SegWit-compatible Pay-to-Witness-Public-Key-Hash (P2WPKH) address. This type of consolidation typically signals a strategy to simplify fund management or reduce future transaction costs. While SpaceX has not provided an official reason for the move, the transaction appears to be a calculated reorganization rather than a reactive measure.
SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk in 2002, first revealed its Bitcoin holdings in July 2021 alongside Tesla. The acquisition was part of Musk’s broader strategy to diversify company assets and embrace crypto adoption. The company has remained silent on its crypto activity since then.

Contract tensions grow as Pentagon eyes SpaceX alternatives
The timing of the Bitcoin movement coincides with growing political turbulence. In June 2025, reports surfaced that former President Donald Trump’s administration had threatened to review or cancel up to $22 billion in federal contracts with SpaceX following a public feud with Elon Musk on X. While most contracts were deemed vital and remained untouched, the incident highlighted growing unease about SpaceX’s role as a dominant government contractor.
In a related development, the U.S. Department of Defense has announced plans to diversify vendors for its $175 billion Golden Dome missile defense initiative, aimed at building a space-based threat detection network. Reuters reports that concerns over “over-reliance on SpaceX” prompted the decision to open the bidding process to other aerospace providers.
SpaceX now holds over $800M in Bitcoin
Despite limited public statements, SpaceX is estimated to hold around 6,977 BTC, currently valued at over $815 million. This positions the company among the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin worldwide. The latest movement reaffirms SpaceX’s continued presence in the crypto space—even as it faces shifting political landscapes and rising scrutiny from government agencies.
